SAVE THE DATE
UUSS Picnic In The Park
Saturday August 15th, 11:00 am

Let’s soak up the beautiful summer sunshine together with a potluck picnic! Come enjoy the peaceful forest and sweeping views at one of Burnaby’s loveliest parks - Robert Burnaby Park*.

More information to come! Questions? Please contact Allyson Yee or Joy Silver.

*Robert Burnaby Park is just 10 minutes from Highway 1 via the Gaglardi Way exit. It is also a 10 minute walk from bus stops. If you're taking public transit, we're happy to arrange a pick-up from a nearby bus stop or SkyTrain station in Burnaby or New Westminster.

The sociocracy circle would like to invite other UUs of the Salish Sea to take the sociocracy training offered through Sociocracy For All.  If we can gather names of another small group of interested folks, we can look into the possibility of another group running through the training in the fall.

The training is a fun way to learn about sociocracy in an experiential way, in a set of four 2-hour sessions online and synchronous, with other group members.  It's a great way to get to know other UUs of the Salish Sea a little better, learn more about sociocracy and how it works, and practice in real time as you go.  The more members of our community who take part in the training the easier it will be for us to start working together with sociocracy as our governance model.

Please email Jacky if you are interested to learn more about it and/or would like to sign up.

Hearts for Tumbler Ridge
Count update as of July 2:

Joy plans to fly to Prince George for school opening week in September which would be the best time to receive our gift of 2,700 hearts (the current known population of Tumbler Ridge).

She has two Iranian young adults working on a video of photos, our project story, and testimonials of what the heart-making has meant to the heart makers.  Please keep sending Joy photos of you doing your heart-making, and a sentence or two of what the heart-making means to you. More details next week.

3 more people have signed up to sew hearts, who bring us to 79!

Two new folk live in Kelowna and will invite their Girl Guides to join our Hearts Project.  Robyn has taken 5 kits of 10 hearts each to invite the Middle-Age Group of kids to sew hearts at our July Eliot camp.  No doubt other campers will want in on the sewing too.

Goalby August 15th = 2,700

We are 83 % toward our goal!  Good contribution from our Stitch Witches’ session on Sat, June 27th!

Please let us know what you are up to during this summer break.  Stories and/or pictures are always welcome and we can then publish in the enews to connect us throughout the summer months.

Your erstwhile editor will start the ball rolling: all of June and it looks like most of July, I have been homebound recovering from surgery but am enjoying catching on some great Britbox mysteries! Also a hearty recommendation for the lovely movie that was made locally: Remarkably Bright Creatures.

Action Now! Tell Your MP: Don’t Fast-Track Destruction

Prime Minister Carney is proposing major legislative changes that would make it easier to ignore critical environmental protections when building mega-projects such as new tar sands pipelines.  Can you send a message to your MP?

Tell Carney: NO MORE PIPELINES! (Please write)

From Stand.earth:  As a fossil-fueled climate change heatwave scorches communities across the country, Premier Danielle Smith just submitted a proposal for a $35 billion Alberta-to-the-West Coast pipeline to Carney's Major Project Office. Smith wants to fast-track this project and wants the public dollars to buy it. While the rest of the world is moving towards renewable energy, Smith wants to hitch our wagon to a dying fossil fuel industry. If we can generate enough public pressure and flood key decision-makers, we can stop this project before it starts. Write here

Send a Message for Old-Growth Forests (Please write)

From Sierra Club: Unsustainable logging practices and lack of protection have put our old-grwth ecosystems at risk. Despite repeated promises from the provincial government to protect these at-risk ecosystems, every day 100 soccer fields of irreplaceable old growth are cut down. And only a fraction of the most endangered stands are protected. You can help save what’s left. Write here.

Please Wade in! The Tilbury LNG Phase 2 Expansion Project (By July 27)

From Stand.earth: The Tilbury LNG Phase 2 Expansion project would lock in a million tonnes of GHGs a year for decades. It threatens important salmon habitat and adds polluting ship traffic. FortisBC is planning to add to customers’ energy bills to cover the cost of the project, while pushing communities toward more fossil fuel use. Use Stand.earth’s point-by-point guide to comment.  Here is the link to the comment period.

URGENT: Save Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya from Torture and Death

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a 53-year-old Palestinian pediatrician and director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, is being tortured to death in Israeli custody. After 555+ days imprisoned without charge, his lawyer found him on July 2, 2026 at the underground Rakefet interrogation facility with severe hammer and baton injuries to his head, eyes, ears and neck. He told his lawyer: "This is the last time you will see me. They brought me here to kill me." International governments and medical associations must act NOW to demand his immediate release and hospitalization before it's too late. Take action now.
